Coordinator: Iuliu Hatieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy
Project manager: Dr. Rares Potcoava BUIGA
“Iuliu Hatieganu" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca is the oldest university of medical and pharmaceutical profile in Transylvania and one of the most valued in the country with research and teaching activities that tend to correlate even since its foundation, UMFCN is one of the most rapidly growing medical schools in the field of research, which now focuses in a broad spectrum of research fields like: clinical studies, advanced imaging techniques, - including molecular imaging, nano-medicine, biotechnology, functional studies, development of novel minimal or noninvasive diagnostic tools, translational research, genomics, proteomics, biomarkers, clinical pharmacology and drug development, public health, mental health. UMFCN through its mission of education and research, promotes and supports scientific research by top research investment in infrastructure, human resource development research (since among students), administrative structures to support research management and by promoting publications and research results utilization.
Comparative analysis of areas that are considered priority and invested in by research grants by the year 2010 showed that, although much has been invested in research with direct clinical application in traditional clinical areas (gastroenterology, hepatology, cardiovascular disease, public health, mental health), university priority is to invest in the future, fundamental research considered top priority at national and European level (tumor genesis study, genomics, molecular medicine, pharmacology).
Through the state budget programs and also through European Commission funds, in period 2010-2011, our university has implemented a number of 149 research grants as coordinator and partner, and during 2011-2012 our university was involved as partner in 6 FP7 projects.
Partner 1: Technical University of Cluj-Napoca
Team Leader: Dr. Anca Ciurte
Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, is a prestigious university which date since 1920. It is one of the four technically oriented universities of Romania classified as “University of Advanced Research and Education”, the highest rank for an institution of higher learning. Study programs in Automation and in Computer Science were started since 1977, and are divided in three bachelor programs, eight master programs and two PhD programs. Since its birth, the Faculty of Automation and Computer Science has earned an international reputation for its high academic standards and excellence in research. The Computer Science Department approaches a wide range of research topics which addresses fundamental issues in Computer Science and Information Technology like: design and analysis of algorithms, data communications, artificial vision and image processing, distributed systems. The IPPRG – Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Group (www.cv.utcluj.ro) is a highly dynamic and productive research entity within the Computer Science Department of TUCN. It was founded in 1998 by prof. Sergiu Nedevschi and since then, the group was involved in numerous national and international research grants and contracts in cooperation with other universities or industrial partners. The group’s expertise is in the following fields: image processing, pattern recognition, data mining, hardware and software architectures design, medical image processing, computer aided diagnosis, image segmentation, image fusion, sensors design, driving assistance applications design and environment modeling. The main achievements that are relevant to this project are: medical image segmentation, high accuracy obstacle detection and tracking, objects classification, camera calibration, real time processing etc. The group’s results were disseminated through several patents and publications in multiple high-impact peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings, with a high number of citation.
